The magic of maths and design: the golden ratio

Imagine you're creating a stunning graphic or a social media post, and you want it to look aesthetically pleasing and for the caption to be read in a certain way?  Then we need to talk about the Golden Ratio (1.618.)

The Golden Ratio is a magical number that's been used by artists and designers for centuries to create visually pleasing compositions. Think of it as the secret ingredient in your favourite recipe – it just makes everything better!  At its core, the Golden Ratio is a simple mathematical relationship. If you take two quantities (let's call them 'a' and ‘b’) the Golden Ratio says that the ratio of (a+b) to a is the same as the ratio of a to b. In numerical terms, this ratio is approximately 1.618.  Now maths isn’t really my thing, but I do like the appeal of the Golden Ratio as it creates dimensions and proportions that are visually pleasing to the eye.

So, how does this work with fonts and text sizes on social media or brand graphics? Easy peasy! When you're deciding on different text sizes for your post (like for headings, subheadings, and body text), you use the Golden Ratio to determine the perfect size for each element.

Here's a simple way to do it:

  • Start with a base text size that looks good on Instagram. This could be the size you want your regular text or body text to be.

  • To find the size for your subheading, multiply the base size by 1.618. This gives you a larger size that's proportionally perfect according to the Golden Ratio.

  • Need a size for the main heading? Just multiply the subheading size by 1.618 again.

Or vice versa.  For example, if your base text size is 10pt, your subheading would be 16.18pt (let's round it to 16pt for simplicity), and your main heading would be about 26pt.This method ensures that your text hierarchy looks visually appealing and harmonious.

And the best part? Your followers might not know why your posts look so aesthetically pleasing, but they'll definitely feel the magic of that 1.618 Golden Ratio charm.
